The City of Bend Accessibility Advisory Committee convened on June 26, 2025, to discuss various topics related to accessibility and transportation for individuals with disabilities. The meeting began with a roundtable discussion where members shared personal experiences and updates on community initiatives.
One significant topic was the ongoing challenges faced by individuals with disabilities regarding public transportation. A member highlighted a past lawsuit in Denver that allowed citizens to choose how to secure their mobility devices on public transit, contrasting it with current limitations in Bend. This feedback was noted as valuable for future discussions with the local transit authority.
The committee also celebrated the upcoming 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), scheduled for July 26, 2025. Members were encouraged to engage with resources available through the ADA anniversary website, which offers toolkits and training opportunities aimed at enhancing community awareness and compliance with accessibility standards.
John Halen provided an update on the Central Oregon Tool Library, which is nearing its opening. This initiative aims to provide tools to community members, including those with mobility impairments, without financial barriers. The library will operate under Habitat for Humanity's sponsorship, allowing for broader access and potential delivery services using electric cargo bikes.
Cassandra, the Accessibility and Equity Manager, emphasized the importance of the ADA and the ongoing advocacy efforts to protect and enhance the rights of individuals with disabilities. She mentioned upcoming events and resources, including a housing summit in San Francisco, aimed at addressing disability-related issues.
Lisa Lang from Full Access High Desert presented concerns regarding transportation costs and accessibility for individuals with disabilities. She noted that recent fare increases for the Central Oregon Transportation (CET) system have raised questions about affordability and service quality. Lang urged the committee to consider how to support local taxi companies in becoming ADA compliant while ensuring that transportation remains accessible and affordable for those in need.
The meeting concluded with a call for collaboration among committee members and local agencies to address these pressing issues, ensuring that the transportation system works effectively for all community members. The committee plans to reconvene after a break in July, with a focus on continuing to improve accessibility in Bend.
