Eaton County Clerk consolidates offices to enhance election administration efficiency

The Eaton County Board of Commissioners held a special budget meeting on June 27, 2025, where County Clerk Diane Bosworth presented a comprehensive overview of her office's responsibilities and proposed changes to improve efficiency and service delivery.

Bosworth emphasized the critical functions of her office, which includes managing elections, vital records, and court filings, all governed by numerous state statutes. She highlighted the challenges posed by budget cuts over the years, which have left her office understaffed and struggling to meet statutory requirements. Currently, the election department operates with only one dedicated employee, a situation Bosworth described as unsustainable given the increasing demands of election administration.

In response to these challenges, Bosworth announced a significant restructuring plan. Effective immediately, her office will combine the roles of the county clerk and register of deeds, allowing for better resource allocation and cross-training among staff. This change aims to enhance the efficiency of both departments and ensure that election administration receives the attention it requires.

Additionally, Bosworth proposed the elimination of an unfilled part-time position and the reclassification of her chief deputy as the election director. She also plans to introduce a new record-keeping system and increase fees for certified copies and election programming, which she believes will generate additional revenue for the county.

The meeting concluded with Bosworth urging the board to consider the long-term implications of continued budget reductions, warning that further cuts could jeopardize the quality of services provided to residents. The board expressed support for her proposals, recognizing the importance of maintaining adequate staffing and resources in the county clerk's office.
