Eaton County Sheriff advocates for law enforcement millage to restore patrol services

Eaton County officials are considering a law enforcement millage to restore essential road patrol services, as highlighted during the Board of Commissioners Special Budget Meeting on June 27, 2025. Sheriff Reich emphasized the urgent need for funding to ensure public safety across the county, stating that current resources are insufficient to meet the demands of law enforcement.

The sheriff pointed out that the state police, with only 18 troopers covering three counties, are unable to provide adequate service, leaving Eaton County with just two troopers per shift. This situation has led to slower response times and a perception among residents that their safety is compromised.

Despite significant budget cuts, Sheriff Reich reported that his department has managed to maintain a minimal presence with four deputies and two sergeants, although this is far from the level of service previously provided. The sheriff expressed gratitude for the support from the commissioners and urged them to prioritize funding for law enforcement, stating, “Lives may depend on your decisions.”

Commissioner Haskell acknowledged the sheriff's efforts to make cuts while still maintaining some level of service, commending the executive team for their resourcefulness. However, concerns were raised about the future of animal control services, which are currently understaffed, with only one officer available to manage the shelter and operations.

The discussions at the meeting underscored the critical need for a sustainable funding solution to ensure that all residents of Eaton County receive the law enforcement services they deserve.
