Stanton Council unveils new design for elevated water tank at Stanton Crossing

During the Staunton City Council's recent work session on June 26, 2025, a significant update was provided regarding the design of the new elevated water storage tank at Stanton Crossing. City Engineer Lyle Hart presented the details of the project, which has garnered attention due to its prominent visibility across the city and surrounding areas.

The water tank, described as a composite style, features a reinforced concrete base supporting a steel bowl for water storage. Standing approximately 240 feet tall, it is expected to be one of the highest tanks in Virginia, strategically designed to align with the city's gravity-fed water distribution system. The tank's diameter measures 70 feet, and its construction is currently underway, with the concrete pedestal already completed.

A key aspect of the meeting was the discussion of the tank's artistic design. The Economic Development Authority (EDA) had previously reviewed and unanimously approved a proposed graphic that will adorn the tank. The design, created in collaboration with local graphic designer Queen City Creative, features a depiction of the downtown skyline against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with the word "Staunton" prominently displayed in bold letters.

Hart emphasized the importance of this design, noting that it not only enhances the tank's visibility but also serves as a representation of the city's growth and heritage. The graphic will wrap around the tank, ensuring visibility from multiple directions, including key vantage points along Interstate 81 and Richmond Avenue.

The council's discussions highlighted the tank's potential as a landmark for the city, reflecting Staunton's identity and aspirations. As the project progresses, the community can anticipate a striking addition to the skyline that symbolizes both functionality and artistic expression.
