Leander Planning Commission discusses zoning changes and public concerns over permits

The Planning and Zoning Commission for the City of Leander convened on June 26, 2025, to discuss several key issues affecting local development and community concerns. The meeting began with a report from Director Griffin, who highlighted recent approvals by the city council, including a zoning change for a property on Crystal Falls Parkway, the approval of a minor Planned Unit Development (PUD) for the VFW post, and a special use permit for the Paradox smoke shop, which includes specific conditions regarding signage and exterior paint.

Additionally, the commission noted the annexation of the Barksdale Phase 3 property, which will undergo a final reading at the upcoming July 1 meeting. The comprehensive plan and zoning for Barksdale were also approved and will be discussed further in July. However, the item concerning microtrenching has been postponed as the city works with Google Fiber and AT&T to establish new regulations.

Looking ahead, the commission will hold a training session on July 24, followed by a review of the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) budget in August. This training aims to clarify expectations for commissioners regarding their roles in the review process.

During the public comment segment, local resident James Dortch expressed frustration over delays in obtaining a special use permit for his proposed game room. He reported difficulties in reaching the planning department and emphasized the potential economic benefits of his business for the community. Dortch indicated that several local business owners are willing to support his proposal but have faced similar challenges in navigating the zoning process.

The meeting concluded with the approval of several items on the consent agenda, while one public hearing item was postponed. The commission remains focused on addressing community concerns and facilitating local development as they move forward.
