Cataño and Toa Baja leaders propose economic development projects to boost tourism

The Puerto Rico Legislature convened on June 23, 2025, to discuss two significant legislative projects aimed at enhancing economic development in the municipalities of Cataño and Toa Baja. The session highlighted the importance of local initiatives to stimulate tourism and commerce in these areas.

The first project, identified as Cámara 3 35, focuses on the Malecón de Cataño, an area recognized for its potential as a tourist attraction. The proposal seeks to designate this waterfront zone, including the Edwin Rivera Sierra Malecón and surrounding avenues, as a site supported by the tourism company. This initiative aims to create a vibrant economic environment that benefits not only local businesses but also visitors from across the island.

The second project, Cámara 3 40, pertains to Toa Baja and has received the endorsement of the local mayor. Similar to the Cataño initiative, this project is seen as a pathway for economic growth, particularly in areas that were not included in previous plans. It encompasses densely populated commercial sectors, including Avenida 2 Palmas and Avenida Los Dominicos, which are frequented by residents and tourists alike.

During the discussions, legislators emphasized the need for economic development that caters to local businesses rather than solely focusing on large corporations. The proposed measures are designed to address the financial challenges faced by municipalities, providing them with new revenue streams. The legislators expressed their commitment to social justice for these communities, recognizing the efforts of local leaders in fostering economic opportunities.

In addition to the legislative proposals, the meeting also highlighted upcoming local festivities, including the Boulevard Festival in Cataño from July 11 to 13 and the patron saint celebrations in Toa Baja from June 26 to 29. These events are expected to draw significant crowds and further promote local commerce.

The session concluded with a call for support from fellow legislators to approve the proposed projects, which are seen as vital for the economic revitalization of Cataño and Toa Baja.
