Virginia community leaders plan events for bicentennial celebrations

The Lexington City Council meeting on May 1, 2025, highlighted a collaborative effort to celebrate the region's history and promote community engagement through upcoming events. A diverse group of local leaders, including representatives from the military, arts, and tourism sectors, gathered to discuss plans for the Virginia 250 celebration, which marks the 250th anniversary of Virginia's statehood.

Mark Bridal from the Officers Association of America emphasized the importance of teamwork among various jurisdictions, including Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge County. The committee aims not only to organize events but also to foster connections among community members to enhance participation and enjoyment. The first planning meeting is scheduled for May 6 at the Virginia Horse Center.

One of the key initiatives discussed was the creation of a logo for the Virginia 250 celebration, which will feature either "Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge, VA 250" or simply "Rockbridge, VA 250." This branding will help unify the region's efforts and promote the events planned for the anniversary.

In addition to the Virginia 250 celebration, the meeting also touched on National Ride a Bike Day, which coincides with Star Wars Day on May 4. Local leaders are encouraging community members to participate in cycling events, highlighting the historical significance of cycling routes established during the 1976 bicentennial celebrations. These routes have become a lasting legacy, with many public history museums emerging in the years following the bicentennial.

The council is also promoting an interactive event at Lilburn Downey Middle School, where a Virginia Tech professor will present a podcast series on Virginia cycling, alongside free bike tune-ups provided by the Outing Club. This initiative aims to engage residents in discussions about cycling safety and the historical significance of local routes.

As the community gears up for these celebrations, the council is committed to ensuring that residents are informed and involved in the planning process. The discussions from this meeting reflect a broader goal of fostering community spirit and preserving the rich history of the region while encouraging active participation in local events.
