Virginia Beach approves free OER textbook for AP Latin course

Under the bright lights of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools boardroom, a pivotal discussion unfolded regarding the future of the AP Latin curriculum. Dr. Crystal Wilkerson, the director of K-12 and gifted programs, along with Kelly Arbel, the world languages coordinator, presented the findings of the textbook adoption committee, emphasizing a significant shift towards open educational resources (OER).

The committee's recommendation for the AP Latin course is the text "College, PILMI, and Virgil," which is available online in PDF format at no cost. This choice not only aligns with the College Board's revised AP Latin curriculum framework set to take effect in the fall of 2025 but also marks a significant change from the current textbooks that have been in use for over a decade. With 15 students enrolled in the AP Latin course, the initial and total implementation costs for the new textbook are projected to be $0 over the next six years, a financial relief for both the school district and families.

As the board prepares for the upcoming school year, the adoption of this OER textbook represents a forward-thinking approach to education, prioritizing accessibility and quality. The decision is set to be finalized in the fall of 2025, paving the way for a new era in the teaching of Latin at Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
