California faces Medicaid coverage cuts impacting 3.4 million residents

During a recent government meeting, California Governor Gavin Newsom addressed the potential impacts of a controversial federal bill on Medicaid coverage. The discussion highlighted significant concerns regarding the estimated cuts to health care services across the United States, particularly in California.

Governor Newsom pointed out that various estimates exist regarding the number of individuals who may lose Medicaid coverage due to the proposed legislation. He referenced data from the Congressional Budget Office and the Urban Institute, which suggest that millions of Americans could be affected. Specifically, he noted that up to 3.4 million Californians are at risk of losing their health coverage under the state's Medi-Cal system, with approximately $28.4 billion in federal funding also at stake.

The governor emphasized that the bill includes new work requirements and extensive paperwork that could complicate eligibility for many individuals. He estimated that around 3 million people in California would be directly impacted by these requirements, which could lead to a reduction of about 400,000 individuals receiving health coverage due to the burdensome nature of the paperwork involved.

Newsom further explained that approximately 5.1 million Californians would be subject to the new rules, with an expectation that about one-third of them would meet the requirements. He expressed concern that the complexity of the paperwork, exemplified by a 36-page form, could deter individuals from maintaining their health coverage.
