The Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education meeting on November 21, 2024, celebrated the academic achievements and community contributions of several outstanding students from John Glenn High School. The highlight of the evening was the recognition of valedictorian Davin Lee and salutatorian Catherine Moravec, with Moravec present to receive accolades for her impressive academic record.
Catherine Moravec, who has taken the most rigorous course load available, is on track to graduate as an AP Scholar with distinction, having completed 17 Advanced Placement exams, four of which she self-taught. This remarkable achievement could earn her up to 51 college credits, allowing her to start college more than halfway through her sophomore year. Alongside her academic success, Catherine is also involved in a prestigious internship at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and is known for her dedication and positive spirit.
Davin Lee, unable to attend the meeting due to a college visit at MIT, will be honored in person next month. Both students exemplify the high standards of academic excellence at John Glenn High School.
The meeting also recognized Demetrius Critchlow, who received commendation as a National Merit Scholar for his outstanding PSAT scores, placing him among the top 34,000 students nationwide. Demetrius, who maintains a GPA above 97, is also a talented musician and active in various school clubs, showcasing his commitment to both academics and the arts.
Additionally, the meeting honored two students, Casey Alfaro Contreras and Christine Felix, for their contributions to the community through the Social Justice Ambassadors program. Both students have demonstrated a strong commitment to promoting equity and inclusion, with Casey actively combating hate and Christine engaging in community service and leadership roles.
The recognition of these students not only highlights their individual accomplishments but also reflects the supportive and nurturing environment fostered at John Glenn High School. As they continue their journeys, their achievements serve as an inspiration to their peers and the broader Elwood community.
