School District adopts new ELL curriculum for middle and high school students

The Longview School District is taking significant steps to enhance English language learning for its multilingual students, as discussed in a recent meeting on June 30, 2025. The district has officially adopted a new curriculum aimed at improving English language development (ELD) for middle and high school students, addressing a long-standing need for more effective educational resources.

Carrie Montgomery, the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, and Amy Nieman, the Director of State and Federal Programs, presented the newly adopted newcomer curriculum. This curriculum is designed specifically for students who are new to the English language, ensuring they receive tailored support to help them integrate into their classrooms more effectively. The curriculum includes multiple units of English language development that are tiered to different proficiency levels, allowing for a more personalized learning experience.

Kristanna Evelyn, a pilot teacher for the curriculum, highlighted the importance of these new materials. She noted that many long-term English language learners have been using outdated resources that do not meet their current educational needs. The new curriculum, which includes both digital and print options, encourages active participation and engagement among students. For instance, students are required to speak with partners during lessons, fostering essential communication skills that have been lacking in previous programs.

The curriculum also aligns with state standards and provides opportunities for cross-curricular learning, which can enhance vocabulary and comprehension across subjects. This is particularly beneficial for students who may struggle with English in other classes, as it allows them to build foundational skills that support their overall academic success.

In addition to the newcomer curriculum, the district is implementing the "Vista Get Ready" program for middle school students. This program focuses on developing proficiency in all areas of language learning, including vocabulary, reading, writing, and grammar, using age-appropriate materials that resonate with older students.

The adoption of these curricula marks a pivotal moment for the Longview School District, as it seeks to better serve its diverse student population.
