During the recent Board of Supervisors meeting in Del Norte County, a significant focus was placed on the results of a statewide community assessment survey targeting older adults. The survey, which gathered responses from approximately 14,000 participants across California, highlighted the unique needs and contributions of older residents in Del Norte County.
Maggie Craft, who presented the findings via Zoom, expressed gratitude to the community for their robust participation, noting that Del Norte and Humboldt Counties exceeded their expected response rates. This engagement provided valuable insights into the challenges and strengths of older adults in the region.
The survey results revealed that while Del Norte County scored well in areas such as community quality and civic engagement, there were notable concerns regarding housing and mental health services. Specifically, the survey indicated that 67% of respondents faced difficulties maintaining their homes, a statistic that underscores the pressing need for affordable and accessible housing options in the area.
Craft emphasized the importance of these findings, stating that they would inform the development of a comprehensive area plan for services aimed at older adults in Del Norte and Humboldt Counties. This plan, set to be submitted to the Department of Aging, aims to address the identified needs and enhance the quality of life for older residents.
In addition to housing concerns, the survey highlighted the significant contributions of older adults to the community, estimating their economic impact at nearly $218 billion through both paid and unpaid work. This figure challenges common stereotypes about older adults and showcases their vital role in the local economy.
As the Board of Supervisors moves forward, the insights gained from this survey will be crucial in shaping policies and programs that support the aging population, ensuring that their voices are heard and their needs are met. The meeting underscored a commitment to fostering a community that values and supports its older residents, paving the way for future initiatives aimed at improving their well-being.
