East Baton Rouge Parish Council approves new official flag design by Mark LeBlanc

The Metropolitan Council of East Baton Rouge Parish convened on June 25, 2025, to discuss several key items, with a notable focus on the approval of a new official flag for the parish. Councilwoman Erin Moak introduced Item 76, which aims to establish a flag that represents the unity of the parish's diverse communities.

During the meeting, Councilman Mote highlighted the importance of having a flag for East Baton Rouge Parish, noting that only two other parishes in Louisiana currently have official flags. He emphasized the need for a symbol that unifies the various entities within the parish, including the City of Baton Rouge and surrounding municipalities like Baker, Zachary, Central, and Saint George.

Mark LeBlanc, the designer of the proposed flag, presented the design and its significance. He explained that the flag incorporates historical elements, such as the red stick symbolizing the blood seen by French explorers along the Mississippi River, and a shield representing the three nations that have governed the area: France, Spain, and Great Britain. LeBlanc, who has a background in flag design and is a member of the North American Vexillological Association, expressed his belief that a parish flag would foster a sense of community and pride among residents.

The council received one email in opposition to the flag but proceeded with discussions. Following LeBlanc's presentation, Councilman Mote made a motion to approve the flag, which was seconded by Councilman Hudson. The council members engaged in further discussion, indicating a positive reception to the proposal.

The approval of the East Baton Rouge Parish flag is seen as a significant step towards enhancing local identity and unity among the parish's residents. The council's decision will likely be finalized in the coming sessions, marking a new chapter in the parish's representation.
