Roanoke County Board approves ordinance for inflation-based salary increases

The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors made significant strides during their meeting on June 24, 2025, with the adoption of an ordinance aimed at enhancing building regulations and addressing community concerns. The board unanimously approved the first reading of this ordinance, which is set to be revisited for a second reading and public hearing on July 8, 2025.

Assistant County Administrator Jason Blunt highlighted the importance of this ordinance, noting that it will provide the county with better control over infill lots and ensure proper water management. Supervisor Tarek Radford expressed gratitude for the collaboration with local home builders, emphasizing that this ordinance is a culmination of years of effort to improve building practices in the area. "While things take a while in government, I appreciate the resolve of the home builders and the county's commitment to this initiative," Radford stated.

In addition to the building ordinance, the board also discussed employee bonuses totaling over $1 million, funded by reimbursements from the Commonwealth of Virginia. County Administrator Richard Kaywood noted a minor adjustment to include specific bonus payments for the electoral board members, ensuring transparency for employees regarding their compensation.

The meeting also addressed a proposed salary adjustment for board members, applying a 3% inflation factor to their current salaries, which have not been increased since 2022. This adjustment will raise their salaries from $19,222.32 to $19,798.99, effective July 1, 2025.
