Lexington Council votes to change zoning and create new city positions

The Lexington Urban County Council convened on July 1, 2025, to address several key agenda items, including zoning changes, budget amendments, and personnel adjustments within the city government.

The meeting commenced with public comments, where a speaker advocated for a shift from the current 30% lot coverage requirement to a floor area ratio (FAR) standard. Following public comments, the council proceeded to the second reading of ordinances. The first item involved changing the zoning designation for a property on Parkers Mill Road from single-family residential to planned neighborhood residential. The second ordinance proposed the removal of the minimum building lot coverage requirement in the corridor business zone, which was approved with a vote of 6-5.

The council then moved to the first reading of several ordinances related to budget adjustments for the fiscal year 2026. These included amendments to reflect current municipal expenditure requirements and the creation of new classified and unclassified positions within the city government. Notably, the council approved the creation of an engineering technician senior position and an administrative specialist senior position, both effective July 1, 2025.

Vice Mayor Wu proposed suspending the rules to expedite the second reading of the ordinance concerning the new positions. The motion was seconded and subsequently passed unanimously.
