PSE and G launches summer relief initiative for energy affordability in New Jersey

The Newark Municipal Council meeting on July 1, 2025, focused on the introduction of the summer relief initiative and affordability programs aimed at assisting residents with rising energy costs. Representatives from PSE&G outlined their commitment to providing safe and affordable energy, particularly for financially vulnerable customers.

The summer relief initiative is designed to help residents manage high electric bills during the summer months, especially following a recent increase in electric supply prices. Key features of this initiative include a summer moratorium on shutoffs for low-income and qualified individuals, which will be in effect from July 1 through September 30. During this period, there will also be no reconnection fees for those who have been disconnected.

Additionally, the state will provide one-time energy assistance payments to help alleviate financial burdens. Every customer will receive a $100 credit, while qualifying individuals will receive an additional $150. PSE&G emphasized that they were the first utility to implement such a summer relief initiative and are actively working with the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities on further proposals to address the impact of rising electric supply prices.

The meeting also highlighted various payment assistance programs available to customers, including the Universal Service Fund and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). These programs aim to help residents stay current on their energy bills and avoid financial hardship. PSE&G offers flexible payment arrangements, allowing customers to pay overdue balances over time.

In addition to financial assistance, PSE&G is promoting energy efficiency measures to help reduce overall energy consumption. Programs include home weatherization, energy assessments, and rebates for energy-efficient appliances, which can provide customers with significant savings on their energy bills.

The discussions at the meeting underscored the city's efforts to support residents facing financial challenges while promoting sustainable energy practices. The initiatives are expected to provide much-needed relief during the summer months and contribute to building stronger, more resilient communities.
