Cupertino celebrates July as Parks and Recreation Month with community events

Under the bright lights of Cupertino's city hall, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement as the City Council convened on July 1, 2025, to celebrate Parks and Recreation Month. The meeting kicked off with a heartfelt proclamation recognizing the dedicated efforts of the Parks and Recreation Department, which plays a vital role in the community during the summer months. Director Rachel Sanders highlighted the department's commitment to providing a variety of camps, classes, and events for residents of all ages, emphasizing the hard work of staff and volunteers who dedicate their evenings and weekends to enrich community life.

Among the anticipated events this summer is the return of the Fourth of July celebration, featuring a pancake breakfast, a children's parade, and a live concert, culminating in a fireworks display visible from multiple locations throughout Cupertino. The city is also introducing a "Dine Out for the Fourth" promotion, encouraging residents to support local restaurants from July 4 to July 7.

Following the proclamation, the council welcomed Jed Seer, president of the MidPen Regional Open Space District, who provided an overview of the district's mission to preserve and protect open spaces while promoting public access. Seer detailed the district's extensive network of 27 open space preserves, covering over 72,000 acres and offering more than 250 miles of public trails. He emphasized the importance of fire resiliency efforts, including partnerships with CAL FIRE and local fire districts to manage vegetation and reduce fire risks.

Seer also discussed exciting upcoming projects, including a wildlife undercrossing on Highway 17 aimed at protecting mountain lions and enhancing genetic diversity in the region. This project, along with others, is set to begin construction around 2027, showcasing the district's commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.

As the meeting concluded, the council's discussions underscored a shared vision for a vibrant, connected community, where parks and open spaces serve as vital resources for recreation, education, and conservation.
