City acquires Inwood Bank for community meeting space renovation

In a recent special city council meeting held on July 1, 2025, the City of Commerce, Texas, addressed pressing community needs and future growth strategies. The discussions highlighted the increasing demand for administrative offices and public meeting spaces, as well as the challenges posed by rising construction costs.

City officials revealed that the acquisition of the Inwood Bank building represents a strategic move to address these needs. The building, purchased at a fraction of the cost of new construction, is set to be transformed into the City Hall Annex Building. This facility will not only house administrative offices but also serve as a much-needed community center. Currently, residents often rely on local universities or churches for large gatherings, as there is a lack of adequate public meeting space in the area.

Despite an unsuccessful grant application to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) aimed at funding a new community center, city leaders are moving forward with plans for the Inwood Bank building. Architectural designs are underway to enhance accessibility and create an open floor plan that can accommodate between 80 to 125 people, depending on the configuration. This new space will allow for various community activities, including senior programs and library events that have outgrown existing facilities.

The remodeling of the building is scheduled to begin in August, following the completion of a local garage sale. This initiative reflects the city's commitment to improving community infrastructure and providing residents with essential services and gathering spaces. As the city continues to grow, the transformation of the Inwood Bank building into a community hub is a significant step towards meeting the evolving needs of Commerce.
