Loudoun County Board narrowly votes against data center approval amid power concerns

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors convened on July 1, 2025, to discuss a contentious application for a new data center, which has sparked significant debate among board members regarding the county's power capacity and infrastructure.

During the meeting, Supervisor Turner expressed strong opposition to the proposed data center, arguing that the county currently lacks sufficient power resources and will only face greater challenges as more data centers are built. He urged his colleagues to vote against the application, labeling it "unconscionable" to approve another data center under the current circumstances.

Legal clarifications were sought regarding the board's ability to consider power capacity in their decision-making process. Mr. Rogers, a legal advisor, confirmed that while the board cannot consider the overall power grid's capacity, they can evaluate whether the development would adversely impact adjacent properties. Despite the concerns raised, a motion to deny the application was put to a vote but ultimately failed with a narrow margin of 5-4. Supervisors Glass, DeCrony, Turner, and Brixman voted in favor of denial, while the remaining members opposed it.

Following the failed motion, Supervisor Umstead proposed a motion to approve the application, which was seconded by Supervisor Kirschner. This motion is now under discussion, indicating that the board is still considering the data center's future in Loudoun County.
