Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge updates collaboration with White Earth Nation and educational initiatives

The Becker County Board of Commissioners meeting on July 1, 2025, highlighted significant updates regarding the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, emphasizing its role in local recreation and conservation efforts.

During the meeting, officials discussed the refuge's expansive 43,000 acres, located just north of town, which has been a vital habitat for wildlife since its establishment in 1938. The refuge offers various recreational activities, including hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation, drawing approximately 1,000 schoolchildren annually for environmental education programs.

Key partnerships were also spotlighted, particularly with the White Earth Nation, which has half of the refuge within its boundaries. A recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and a co-stewardship agreement were established to enhance collaboration on natural resource management and cultural integration within the refuge's programs.

The meeting underscored the importance of community involvement, with over 100 volunteers contributing significantly to the refuge's upkeep and educational initiatives. As the county continues to foster these relationships, the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge remains a cornerstone of local environmental stewardship and recreation.
