City approves M Village redevelopment with 20 duplexes in Grand Rapids

The Grand Rapids Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (BRA) made significant strides in community development during its meeting on June 25, 2025, approving key projects aimed at revitalizing local neighborhoods. The most notable decision was the approval of a work plan and development agreement for the M Village redevelopment project, which will introduce 20 new housing units in the area. This project, with an estimated cost of $7.8 million, is set to begin construction later this summer, with completion expected by summer 2026.

The M Village project will consist of 10 duplexes, contributing to the growing demand for affordable housing in the community. The Southtown Corridor Improvement Authority has also shown strong support by agreeing to forgo nearly $50,000 in tax increment revenue over 25 years to facilitate this development.

In addition to the M Village project, the BRA addressed the Wellhouse LDHA LLC project at 32 Pleasant Southeast. The authority approved an amendment to a previous grant agreement, increasing funding to $155,000 to cover unexpected stormwater management costs. This project is also nearing completion, with most of the associated multifamily buildings already under construction.

The meeting also included updates on the Environmental Site Assessment Grant Program, highlighting ongoing assessments for potential new developments, including a new restaurant anticipated to create three jobs. With approximately $24,000 remaining in the grant program budget for the fiscal year, the BRA is poised to support further environmental assessments as needed.
