Student government plans holiday events and environmental initiatives at Wantagh schools

The Wantagh Union Free School District Board of Education held its business meeting on December 12, 2024, focusing on various student initiatives and community engagement activities. The meeting began with updates from student representatives, highlighting recent successful events and upcoming activities.

The student body reported a successful Thanksgiving food drive, with the Class of 2026 leading in donations for the third consecutive year. The contributions helped provide meals for families in need. Additionally, students participated in a "Letters to Veterans" event, collecting over 100 letters of gratitude for veterans at the Northport VA hospital, which were well-received during the holiday season.

Looking ahead, the student government announced a spirit week scheduled for the following week, featuring themed days such as pajama day and holiday sweater day. Participation in these events will earn points for class rankings displayed on school TVs, aimed at increasing student involvement.

A clothes drive is also planned for after the winter break, encouraging students to donate gently used clothing instead of discarding them after receiving new items during the holidays. Donation boxes will be placed in the main lobby for easy access.

In an effort to promote environmental awareness, the student government is planning a project to recycle discarded Christmas trees into mulch, collaborating with local environmental clubs to engage more students in this initiative.

Heather Hosek, co-president of the 6 to 12 PTA, shared updates on fundraising efforts, including the sale of Pura Vida bracelets and embroidered socks, as well as upcoming events like an Islanders game ticket sale and a family comedy night in January.

Lisette Montagano from the Quantrell Sports Booster Club reported strong merchandise sales and successful events, including a recent basketball tournament. The club is also enhancing its social media presence to showcase student athletes and alumni.

The meeting concluded with an invitation for public comments, but no attendees stepped forward. Board members extended holiday wishes to all present, marking a positive end to the meeting. Overall, the discussions reflected a vibrant school community actively engaged in supporting both students and local families during the holiday season.
