Clay County discusses substantial tipping fee increase impacting solid waste services

The Clay County Board of Commissioners held a live meeting on July 1, 2025, addressing several key topics, including financial commitments related to solid waste services and updates on departmental activities.

The meeting began with a discussion on the proposed increase in tipping fees for solid waste services, which would result in an annual financial commitment of $24,672. This represents a 51% increase over the previous year. Commissioners noted that this increase would affect all residents in Clay County, regardless of whether they live in urban or rural areas, as the same tipping fee rate applies to everyone.

Commissioner Darren provided updates on his recent activities, including participation in the County Board of Appeal and Equalization, a Loudermill hearing for an employee, and budget meetings with various departments such as GIS, planning and zoning, and tech services. He highlighted the success of the county picnic, which served 354 employees at a cost of approximately $1,800, funded by department heads, the commissary fund, and the wellness committee.

Additionally, Commissioner Darren reported on ongoing union negotiations with deputies and sheriff administrative staff, noting that all bargaining units are scheduled for their first negotiations, with the goal of completing them by August 4. He also mentioned an increase in employer contributions for correctional staff, which is now set at 8.75%.
