Interns launch Santa Cruz anti littering campaign to enhance community awareness

During the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors meeting on July 2, 2025, a group of interns from the Leaders in Training program presented their ongoing anti-littering campaign, highlighting the importance of preserving the county's natural beauty. The interns expressed gratitude to their GEAR UP coaches for the opportunity to engage in community service and develop professional skills.

The interns emphasized the impact of litter on local recreational areas, such as Pena Blanca and Patagonia Lake, which are often marred by trash, detracting from the outdoor experience for residents and visitors alike. One intern shared a personal experience of being deterred from hiking due to the overwhelming litter along the trails, illustrating the broader issue of environmental neglect in the region.

In their efforts to combat littering, the interns organized a trash pickup event at Memorial Park, where they collected various items, including cans and plastic straws. They also launched an Instagram account, "Santa Cruz Against Litter," to raise awareness and promote responsible waste disposal among the community. The interns reported a positive response to their social media efforts, with numerous views on their educational content aimed at encouraging residents to secure their trash.
