Housing Kitsap updates Nordic Cottages project in Poulsbo with funding and tenant process details

The Poulsbo City Council meeting on July 2, 2025, highlighted significant progress on the Nordic Cottages project, a key initiative aimed at providing affordable housing in the community. Representatives from Housing Kitsap presented an update on the project, which has been in development since 2020, emphasizing the collaborative efforts that have brought it to fruition.

Freddie Linares, the director of compliance for Housing Kitsap, shared that the construction of two Nordic-style cottages, which will house eight one-bedroom apartments, is nearing completion. The cottages, located at 609 Northeast Lincoln, are designed with sustainability in mind, featuring solar panels and a unique architectural style that reflects the Nordic theme. The project has garnered attention from residents eager to learn about the tenant selection process, which was also discussed during the meeting.

The Nordic Cottages project is a result of strategic partnerships, including collaboration with Gateway Fellowship for parking solutions and Coats Design for architectural support. The city’s Department of Planning and Economic Development has played a crucial role in facilitating the project, which is part of a broader commitment by the city council to allocate land for permanently affordable housing.

Council members were reminded that the initiative stems from a resolution passed in 2020, which set aside city property for affordable housing development. Additionally, funding for the project has been supported by a 0.1% sales tax approved by the council, generating approximately $600,000 annually for affordable housing and services for vulnerable populations.

Looking ahead, the council plans to discuss the operating budget and management agreements for the cottages in upcoming meetings. The anticipated move-in date for residents is approaching, marking a significant milestone in Poulsbo's efforts to address housing needs in the community.
