Beltran County officials respond to extensive tornado damage and declare local emergency

Beltrami County officials are mobilizing resources and support in response to extensive damage caused by severe weather that struck the area recently. During a government work session on July 1, 2025, emergency management leaders detailed the challenges faced during the crisis, including communication breakdowns and the overwhelming need for emergency services.

The storm, which resulted in significant destruction across southern Beltrami County, prompted immediate action from local emergency responders. Chief Sherwood and other officials reported that the county's infrastructure was heavily impacted, leading to a temporary loss of communication for 15 minutes—a critical period for dispatchers trying to coordinate emergency responses. The situation was dire, with many residents stranded and in need of urgent assistance.

In light of the disaster, the county declared a local state of emergency, which allows for the mobilization of state resources and facilitates collaboration among various departments. This declaration was supported by Governor Walz, who visited the area to assess the damage and discuss recovery efforts with local officials.

The American Red Cross has been actively involved, conducting assessments that revealed 22 homes were severely damaged, with many more sustaining minor damage. The initial estimates of recovery costs are staggering, with projections already reaching upwards of $3 million, and officials expect this figure to rise as recovery efforts continue.
