Flagstaff City Council approves funding for NAU marching band and Market of Dreams

The council unanimously adopted Resolution 2025-40, which formalizes an intergovernmental agreement with the Flagstaff Unified School District for the use, maintenance, and repair of facilities. Council member House expressed gratitude for the extensive work put into this agreement, highlighting its importance for both the city and the school district.

In a notable move, the council also passed Resolution 2025-41, reaffirming its support for the designation of the Baj Nuwavjo Itatkukveni Grand Canyon National Monument. This resolution emphasizes the council's opposition to any efforts aimed at reducing the monument's boundaries or repealing its designation. The discussion included personal connections, with one council member noting that their spouse is on the steering committee for the monument, underscoring the local commitment to preserving this significant area.

Additionally, the council reviewed funding requests for the fiscal year 2026, including a proposal to support the Northern Arizona University (NAU) marching band, which has been invited to perform in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The band, selected from over 100 applicants, aims to raise $600,000 for the trip, with the council considering a contribution of $10,000 to assist with costs for participating students.

Another funding request discussed was for the Market of Dreams, a nonprofit supporting micro-entrepreneurship. Council member Garcia proposed a $3,500 contribution to help with necessary improvements to their facility, emphasizing the organization's role in fostering local business development.
