West Covina celebrates Parks Make Life Better Month with community service recognition

The City of West Covina held its City Council meeting on July 1, 2025, focusing on community service and the importance of local parks. The meeting began with a proclamation recognizing July as "Parks Make Life Better Month," emphasizing the role of parks and recreational facilities in fostering community engagement and well-being.

Mayor and council members expressed their strong belief in the value of community service events, highlighting how these gatherings unite residents from diverse backgrounds. The mayor praised the community service staff for their dedication, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they provided essential support to seniors and residents.

Susie Perez, Deputy Director of Community Services, presented the proclamation and underscored the significance of equitable access to parks and recreational spaces. She noted that West Covina boasts 16 parks, a sportsplex, and four community centers, which serve as vital resources for residents' emotional and physical well-being.

During her presentation, Perez introduced key staff members who contribute to the success of community programs, including coordinators responsible for environmental services, senior activities, and adaptive recreation for individuals with special needs. She also highlighted the efforts of the head cook, who prepares meals for seniors, serving between 150 to 180 individuals daily.

The meeting concluded with a brief video showcasing the daily operations of the community services department, followed by the introduction of community and senior services commissioners who provide guidance and support for local programs. The council acknowledged the importance of these services in building a stronger, healthier community.
