Oxnard City Council proposes new skateboard park safety ordinance

The Oxnard City Council convened on July 15, 2025, to discuss a proposed ordinance aimed at enhancing safety regulations for city skateboard parks. Deputy City Attorney Mira Saleh presented the ordinance, which seeks to establish new safety measures in anticipation of a new skate park project in Colonia.

The proposed ordinance will add Article 28 to Chapter 7 of the Oxnard City Code, focusing on public safety for users of skate park facilities. Key provisions include mandatory safety gear for all skateboarders and users of wheeled recreational devices. Specifically, individuals are required to wear helmets, elbow pads, and knee pads while using the parks. The city will also post signs to inform users of these requirements.

In addition to safety gear, the ordinance outlines several operational regulations. Users under the age of 12 must be supervised by a parent or guardian. The ordinance prohibits the use of outside equipment or motorized vehicles within the skate parks. It also mandates that any injuries sustained at the parks be reported to city personnel, with an injury report form to be completed.

Failure to comply with these regulations could result in immediate eviction from the skate parks or citation as an infraction. The city is tasked with ensuring that appropriate signage is displayed to inform users of these rules.
