Temple Terrace budget hampers storm equipment purchases after governor's veto

In addition to the sandbag machine, the city requested fuel trailers to support the operation of backup generators that powered essential facilities during power outages. The council noted that approximately 36 facilities required backup power, and the lack of adequate fuel storage and transportation options hindered effective emergency response. The city received a shipment of 10,000 gallons of diesel fuel from the state but lacked the means to distribute it efficiently to the generators.

The appropriations request included other items, such as equipment to ensure reliable internet service during emergencies. The council expressed gratitude to local representatives, including House Budget Chairman Lawrence McClure and Senator Ed Hooper, for their support in advancing the request through the legislative process. However, the council reported disappointment as the governor vetoed the budget allocation, which was part of a larger veto affecting nearly $600 million in projects statewide.

Despite this setback, city officials remain hopeful about securing funding through local sources to acquire the necessary equipment. The budget development process is ongoing, with plans to incorporate some of these needs into the draft budget as discussions continue. The council's commitment to enhancing storm preparedness reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding the community against future weather-related challenges.
