Commissioners revise rezoning policy for interested property owners ahead of August hearing

Tippecanoe County officials are moving forward with a new policy regarding property rezoning, aimed at streamlining the process for residents interested in changing their property designations. During a recent meeting of the Area Plan Commission (APC) Executive/Ordinance Committee, it was announced that the county will cover the costs for property owners who wish to rezone to a specific designation, referred to as "double A," provided they express their interest by the end of July.

The committee clarified that interested property owners should contact the county to initiate the rezoning process at no cost. If they choose not to participate by the deadline, they will have to bear the expenses themselves if they decide to rezone in the future. This initiative is designed to encourage participation and simplify the legal process for those willing to make changes.

The committee plans to present the results of this outreach during their September meeting, where they will provide updates on how many property owners have opted in for the rezoning. The legal description of the rezoning will be adjusted based on the number of willing participants, allowing for flexibility up until the hearing date.

The meeting also included a public comment segment, where community members were invited to share their thoughts. The committee is committed to keeping the lines of communication open as they navigate this new policy, ensuring that residents are informed and engaged throughout the process.
