Animal shelter reduces dogs' length of stay by 61% and cats by 38%

The Animal Control Advisory Board meeting held on July 2, 2025, in St. Mary's County, Maryland, focused on significant improvements in animal care and control services. The meeting highlighted a notable reduction in the length of stay for animals in the shelter, with dogs averaging just 9 days compared to 23 days during the same period last year. Cats are now averaging 13 days in care, down from 21 days in 2024, with most of their time spent in foster homes. During the meeting, it was reported that the animal control department received 769 calls for service, including 143 after-hours calls. The department handled 71 cruelty complaints, 54 investigations related to domestic animals causing human bites, and 15 investigations concerning domestic animal-to-animal bites.

In staffing updates, the board welcomed two new staff members: an adoptions coordinator and a volunteer coordinator. The hiring process is ongoing for three additional care staff members, while vacancies remain for an animal control supervisor and a veterinarian position.
