Supervisor Cohen leads hearing on youth support post Hertz Playground shooting

A critical hearing on the ongoing support for families affected by the tragic shooting at Hertz Playground in June 2024 took place in San Francisco, led by Supervisor Malia Cohen. The incident, which resulted in the death of a father in front of dozens of children, has prompted city officials to ensure that the impacted families receive long-term support and services.

During the meeting, city departments, including the District Attorney's office, the Department of Public Health, and the San Francisco Unified School District, provided updates on their coordinated efforts to assist those affected. Supervisor Cohen emphasized the need for continuous support, stating, "It's our responsibility to ensure that the youth and families impacted by this incident are supported not just in the weeks after, but months and, if needed, years ahead."

Diana Olivier Rocha, Director of Violence Prevention Services, outlined the immediate response following the shooting, which included a street violence response team that developed strategies for intervention and support. The team has been working to provide mental health services, educational support, and community engagement initiatives to help heal the trauma experienced by the children and families involved.

The San Francisco Unified School District reported that 64 students were directly affected by the incident, with ongoing support provided through social workers and mental health services. Kevin Gogan, Director of Safety and Wellness, highlighted the importance of addressing the needs of students who witnessed the violence, ensuring they receive appropriate care and support.

The Department of Public Health also reported on their efforts to provide trauma-informed care, including counseling and community support services. Stephanie Felder from the department noted the challenges of addressing mental health stigma in the community, emphasizing the need for culturally competent services.

As the anniversary of the shooting approaches, city officials are planning a "celebration of life" event to honor the victim and foster community healing. They are also working on enhancing the Hertz Playground facilities to create a safer environment for children.
