Calvin Welch, co-chair of the Coalition for a Complete Community, made a compelling case for affordable housing during a recent San Francisco County meeting. He emphasized the importance of aligning community planning with the city’s development processes, particularly in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Welch highlighted that since 2019, the coalition has worked to ensure that local voices are heard in planning discussions, advocating for the needs of existing residents.
Welch specifically urged the board to support Supervisor Preston's amendment, which he believes honors the community's planning efforts and addresses the demonstrated need for affordable housing and essential services in the area. He stated, “The supervisor's resolution keeps faith with that community planning process,” reinforcing the coalition's commitment to local input.
Following Welch, Sherilyn Adams, executive director of Larkin Street Youth Services, echoed the call for support. She noted the organization's long-standing involvement in the community and its collaboration with various local groups. Adams stressed the urgent need for a new building to serve homeless youth, advocating for the inclusion of a drop-in space in the proposed development.
The discussions reflect a strong community push for affordable housing solutions and support for vulnerable populations in San Francisco, highlighting the ongoing efforts to integrate local needs into city planning. The board's decision on these amendments could significantly impact the future of housing and services in the Haight-Ashbury area.
