San Francisco County is set to enhance pedestrian safety with the approval of a $500,000 grant from the California state budget for the Havelock Pedestrian Bridge Safety Improvement Project. During a recent government meeting, the San Francisco Public Works Department presented the resolution, which aims to construct a 370-foot sidewalk connecting the Havelock Bridge to City College, addressing a critical gap in pedestrian access.
The project will also include the installation of three new curb ramps and upgrades to the existing curb and gutter, ensuring safer navigation for students and community members. The construction is expected to take approximately 180 days, pending any unforeseen delays, with ongoing maintenance to be managed by City College.
This initiative is a culmination of collaborative efforts led by outgoing Assembly Member Ting, who worked closely with local officials to address long-standing safety concerns in the area. Supervisor Melgar expressed gratitude for the project, highlighting its importance for the Southeast sector of the city and the positive impact it will have on the community.
The committee unanimously moved to forward the resolution to the full board with a positive recommendation, signaling strong support for the project. As the city prepares for the construction phase, residents can look forward to improved safety and accessibility in this vital corridor.
