The project aims to preserve the landmark school building, constructed in 1888, while introducing a modern educational facility for La Scuola International School.

During a recent city meeting, the proposal received unanimous approval from the Historic Preservation Commission, allowing for the construction of a new four-story school building that will include 15 classrooms and an expanded play yard. The existing portable classrooms will be demolished to make way for this new structure, which is designed to enhance the educational environment while maintaining the integrity of the historic site.

La Scuola, which has been leasing the property since 2019, emphasizes its commitment to community engagement and educational excellence. The school serves a diverse student body and aims to provide a high-quality education rooted in Italian language and culture. The new building will not only accommodate more students but also feature modern amenities, including improved safety lighting and a designated mural space.

The project has garnered substantial community support, with 127 letters in favor and only one opposition letter received from a local advocacy group. La Scuola representatives highlighted their extensive outreach efforts, including multiple community meetings to address concerns and share project updates.

As the project progresses, it will require further approvals related to transportation management and parking adjustments, as the new building will not include car parking spaces but will provide ample bicycle parking. The city anticipates that these developments will enhance the educational landscape of the Mission District while preserving its historical significance.

The next steps involve finalizing the planned unit development (PUD) approval, which will allow for modifications to existing zoning requirements, ensuring that the project aligns with the city’s broader goals for community development and educational access.
