Budget Cuts Threaten Vital Youth Programs in San Francisco, Students Urge Action

At a recent San Francisco County meeting, students passionately voiced their concerns over proposed budget cuts to essential youth programs. Junior Balboa High School student, who is part of the KBT youth program, highlighted the personal impact of these cuts, stating, "The afterschool program at my school taught me a lot of lessons and have helped me grow." He urged officials not to defund programs that are crucial for youth development.

Luis Peralta, an immigrant and advocate for non-English speakers, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for educational support for future generations. "Don't oppress my dreams," he implored, reminding the committee of the importance of investing in the community's youth.

Kai, a member of Gabriela Youth Excelsior, criticized the city's increasing policing budget, arguing that it does not address the safety issues faced by youth. "More policing is not the solution," he stated, calling for funding to community services that genuinely support working-class families and empower youth.

Solisia, another student from Balboa High, shared her experiences with injustice in her neighborhood, asserting that youth programs have provided safety and support where police have failed. "You need to invest in us, the youth," she urged, reinforcing the call to halt budget cuts.
