During a recent government meeting, officials highlighted the successful implementation of a new permit tracking system that allows applicants to monitor the status of their submissions in real-time. This system, launched in July 2023, provides detailed insights into how much time is spent on applications, both in-house and with the applicants themselves.

One of the key improvements discussed was the introduction of a 10-day recheck process, which prioritizes projects that require additional review, ensuring they remain at the forefront of the queue. This change is part of a broader initiative to streamline the overall permit process, which has faced criticism for delays in the past.

In November 2023, DBI began a comprehensive overhaul of its permit tracking system, collaborating with various city departments to refine the intake process. This effort was partly driven by new state legislation aimed at expediting reviews. By front-loading information requirements, the department has seen a marked decrease in the time taken to complete reviews, consistently meeting the state-mandated 15-day timeline.

As a result of these enhancements, DBI has reported a decrease in the rejection rate of applications, dropping from 33% to 14%. The department is also on track to meet its goal of reviewing 85% of projects within established timelines, with current performance at 65%.
