The City of San Francisco is making significant strides in the management and future of the Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, as highlighted in a recent government meeting. Acting CEO Roland Pickens provided an update on the facility's closure plan and the ongoing recertification process mandated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
A key development announced during the meeting was the appointment of Sandra Simon as the new Nursing Home Administrator and CEO of Laguna Honda. Simon, who brings extensive experience in long-term care, is set to officially start on June 26. Her previous role as Chief Administrative Officer at the Jewish Home in San Francisco positions her well to lead Laguna Honda through its current challenges. Pickens expressed confidence in Simon's ability to enhance the facility's operations and support its staff.
In addition to Simon's appointment, the hospital is actively recruiting for several critical positions, including a Director of Nursing and a Medical Director. The recent hiring of Greg Chase as the Director of Facilities and Engineering is also noteworthy, as he has been instrumental in addressing previous fire safety concerns at the facility.
The meeting underscored the urgency of the recertification efforts following CMS's termination of Laguna Honda's participation in its program last April. Pickens reassured the commission that a dedicated team, including both staff and expert consultants, is in place to implement necessary regulatory improvements. The city signed a settlement agreement with CMS last November, which is a crucial step in the recertification process.
As Laguna Honda navigates these transitions, the focus remains on ensuring quality care for its residents and meeting regulatory standards. The leadership changes and ongoing recruitment efforts are aimed at stabilizing the facility and enhancing its service delivery, ultimately benefiting the community it serves. The city is committed to supporting Laguna Honda through this critical period, with the new leadership team expected to play a pivotal role in its recovery and future success.
