In a recent San Francisco government meeting, community members voiced strong support for a proposed affordable housing project, urging officials to deny an appeal that could delay its construction. Residents expressed optimism about the dual goals of building housing while ensuring environmental safety, highlighting significant progress in cleaning up toxic sites in the area.
One long-time resident emphasized that the construction of affordable housing does not compromise ongoing cleanup efforts. “You don’t have to choose between those,” they stated, reassuring the community that continued testing and remediation will persist alongside development. This sentiment was echoed by several speakers who underscored the urgency of addressing the city’s housing crisis, particularly for families in need.
Mike Chen, a volunteer with SFMB for more housing, noted the extensive efforts made by the developer and the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to meet safety standards. He urged the commission to expedite the project, which would provide homes for over 100 families in the Sunset District. “We need to make it faster and easier for families to live in the sunset,” he said.
Bobak Asvendiari, representing San Francisco YIMBY, highlighted the pressing issue of homelessness and inadequate housing in the city. He argued that the appeal should be denied to remove barriers to much-needed affordable housing. “There are people every night in the city that are sleeping on the streets,” he pointed out, emphasizing the critical shortage of housing.
Jay Natoli, the San Francisco organizing director for EMB Action, also called for the appeal's denial, reinforcing the compelling testimonies presented during the meeting. He expressed confidence in the safety measures in place, stating that the information shared about soil vapors was well-prepared and informative.
The meeting underscored a collective community desire for progress in housing development while maintaining environmental integrity. As discussions continue, the city remains focused on balancing the urgent need for affordable housing with the commitment to a safe and healthy environment for all residents.
