In a recent meeting, city officials highlighted a significant success story in addressing the needs of a 39-year-old male patient struggling with alcohol use disorder. This individual had been a frequent user of the 911 emergency system, making 109 calls since 2020, with a notable increase in 2023, including 73 calls so far this year and 36 in June alone.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel made a concerted effort to engage with him, reaching out 24 times during June's 36 activations. Despite these attempts, initial efforts to enroll him in a detox program were unsuccessful. However, the situation took a positive turn when he was admitted to a managed alcohol program, specifically designed for individuals who have struggled with traditional detox methods.
This program provides a monitored environment where participants receive alcohol in controlled amounts, helping to prevent withdrawal symptoms and reduce the risk of serious health issues. Since joining the program in July, the patient has only activated the 911 system three times, marking a remarkable 92% decrease in his emergency calls.
City officials praised the dedication of the EMS 6 division and community paramedics for their advocacy and support in guiding this individual toward a more stable and healthier lifestyle. This case underscores the importance of tailored interventions in addressing complex health issues and highlights the city's commitment to improving community health outcomes.
