A significant fire on August 1 at 300 Octavia in Hayes Valley has prompted swift action from the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection (DBI). The blaze destroyed a housing development under construction and led to the closure of portions of Octavia Boulevard for over a week. In response, DBI issued a notice of violation to the property owner, mandating the securing of permits, demolition of the damaged framework, and site clearance.
When progress stalled, DBI escalated the situation with an emergency order, compelling the property owner to expedite the demolition process. Following this order, a contractor was quickly hired, and demolition efforts commenced, allowing Octavia Boulevard to reopen just in time for the anticipated influx of traffic due to the Outside Lands concert in Golden Gate Park.
DBI's proactive measures ensured public safety and minimized disruption, with demolition crews working late into the night to bring down the damaged scaffolding. The roadway was reopened before noon on Friday, and debris removal continued over the weekend.
In a related matter, DBI addressed an unpermitted illuminated structure on the roof of the Twitter building at 1355 Market Street. After receiving numerous complaints, inspectors were initially denied access but later observed the structure being dismantled. The property owner obtained the necessary demolition permit, resolving the issue.
Additionally, a commendation was shared for acting chief building inspector Kevin Birmingham, who received praise for his efficient handling of permit reviews and inspections, highlighting the department's commitment to quality service.
These developments underscore the city's dedication to maintaining safety and order in the face of challenges, ensuring that infrastructure and community needs are met promptly.
