The San Francisco Entertainment Commission convened on July 4, 2025, to discuss the upcoming Portola Music Festival, scheduled for September 19-29 at Pier 80. The meeting highlighted the festival's commitment to community engagement and sound mitigation efforts, following feedback from previous events.
Tim Lay, the director of festivals at Goldenvoice, presented the festival's plans, emphasizing the importance of local involvement. He noted that approximately 90% of staff, vendors, and attendees are from within 50 miles of the venue. Lay expressed a dedication to improving the festival experience based on community feedback, stating, "We are personally reading every single email, listening to all of the feedback, and analyzing all of the data."
Key changes for this year's festival include ending outdoor amplified noise 15 minutes earlier on Sundays, adjusting stage orientations to minimize sound impact, and enhancing community outreach efforts. The festival will also implement a more robust transportation plan, utilizing the Third Street light rail station and improving shuttle services to accommodate attendees.
The commission received public comments, including concerns from Alameda residents about noise and vibrations experienced during last year's festival. Sarah Henry, communications director for Alameda, acknowledged the improvements made by Goldenvoice but requested that outdoor programming on Sunday night conclude by 10 PM to further reduce disturbances.
The festival anticipates an attendance of 40,000, with a demographic primarily consisting of adults aged 24 to 37. The commission expressed support for the festival's efforts while remaining attentive to community concerns, indicating a collaborative approach to ensure a successful event that respects local residents.
As the festival approaches, Goldenvoice aims to continue refining its strategies to enhance the experience for both attendees and the surrounding community, reinforcing its role as a responsible neighbor in the Bay Area.
