Valley County outlines campground management plan with Fish and Game collaboration

Valley County officials are moving forward with plans to enhance the management of local campgrounds in collaboration with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. During the Board of County Commissioners meeting on July 7, 2025, discussions centered on the operational responsibilities and fee structures for campground management, set to begin in 2026.

The county will maintain a cooperative management style with Fish and Game, allowing for shared decision-making on key issues, including the setting of nightly rates for campground usage. While the county will have the authority to establish these rates, they will do so in concurrence with Fish and Game, ensuring a collaborative approach to management.

Commissioners emphasized the importance of clarity in the upcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the county and Fish and Game. Concerns were raised about potential conflicts in decision-making, particularly regarding future personnel changes. To mitigate these risks, officials are advocating for explicit guidelines within the MOU to outline decision-making processes and responsibilities.

Additionally, there was a proposal to consider a modest increase in nightly rates, suggesting a potential rise of $5, which will be further discussed in future meetings. The county aims to ensure that any changes are communicated clearly and agreed upon by both parties to avoid misunderstandings down the line.

As preparations for the MOU continue, the county is committed to maintaining current fee structures and operational practices, ensuring a smooth transition into the new management framework.
