County approves $3M Flat River sidewalk project grant resolution

St. Francois County is set to enhance its infrastructure with a significant investment in the Flat River sidewalk project, which has seen its projected costs drop from $6 million to approximately $3 million. During the Commission Meeting on July 7, 2025, officials discussed the project's funding and design details, emphasizing the importance of securing grants to cover the county's share of the expenses.

The project aims to construct a concrete sidewalk along Flat River Road, featuring a curb and stormwater management system. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility in the area, particularly from Farmington to the MAC entrance. The county is actively pursuing a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant, with applications due by July 11, and expects to receive updates in the coming months.

In addition to the sidewalk project, the meeting addressed the county's financial health, noting a stabilization in sales tax revenues after a period of decline. Officials reported a positive trend in Proposition B funding, which is expected to support various community services.

The Sheriff’s Department also provided updates, reporting over 10,000 calls for service this year, with a particularly busy holiday weekend resulting in multiple incidents, including two fatal accidents. The department highlighted the completion of renovations to the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment (RSAT) room, funded through a grant, which aims to reduce recidivism among inmates.

The meeting concluded with discussions on ongoing road maintenance and infrastructure improvements, including the replacement of culverts and preparations for road overlays. The county is committed to maintaining and enhancing its public services, ensuring that community needs are met effectively.
