Linn County Health Department promotes community wellness with diverse events and programs

Linn County's health department is making strides in community engagement and wellness initiatives, as highlighted in the recent commissioner meeting on July 7, 2025. Among the key updates, the department reported an increase in client appointments for June, reflecting a growing interest in health services.

One of the standout programs discussed was the "rock snake" initiative, which encourages community members to return painted rocks. With about 100 rocks still unreturned, officials urged residents to bring them back to avoid the need for repainting next year. This initiative not only fosters creativity but also promotes community involvement.

The health department also hosted successful "Keep Me Safe" events at local libraries, providing essential safety education and supplies to residents. Additionally, a diabetic education class is set to conclude with a "dinner done right" session, emphasizing practical cooking skills for managing diabetes.

In a proactive approach to public health, nurses distributed sunscreen and shared sun safety tips at local pools, while staff assisted with car seat installations at a multi-county baby shower. The department is also accommodating employees who missed biometric screenings during open enrollment, ensuring everyone has access to necessary health checks.

Looking ahead, the health department is preparing for several upcoming events, including the mammogram bus visit on July 10, which is fully booked but has a cancellation list available. World Breastfeeding Week will be observed from August 1 to 7, coinciding with the Linn County Fair, where the department will set up a breastfeeding station and provide tick and mosquito protection.

Furthermore, a new partnership with K State Research and Extension Office will kick off a "Create Better Health" program, starting with a mom and me nutrition and cooking class. Residents interested in participating are encouraged to RSVP to ensure adequate supplies.

The health department's community garden is also thriving, with green beans expected to be harvested soon for use in nutrition programs. These initiatives reflect a commitment to enhancing public health and community well-being in Linn County.
