The town performed proof rolls — a test in which a heavily laden dump truck is driven across the base to check load-bearing — and Kleinhenz said the base has failed two proof rolls. \"If the base isn't good and you put the asphalt, both the base coat and the top coat, you're going to have issues over time,\" Kleinhenz said.

Officials outlined two paths: wait for sustained dry weather so the base can dry and pass the proof roll (Wetnight estimated that could take until August given local weather patterns), or use chemical stabilization to harden the stone base so it can pass testing. Kleinhenz said the chemical stabilization option would increase cost; the town estimates roughly $150,000–$200,000 for this section and the next out to Parkwood.

Kleinhenz said the town is spending nearly $3,000,000 on the project and emphasized the goal of long service life: \"We don't wanna do this road every 15 to 20 years... we're trying to make sure our investment we're spending almost $3,000,000 on this road. Our investment is going to last as long as it, possibly can.\" He asked residents near the work — roughly \"12 or 15 homes\" he estimated — to be patient and to contact the town with driveway or access issues.
