Speedway officials update on 20 Fifth Street reconstruction and Crawfordsville Road sidewalks

The Town Council of Speedway provided a detailed update on ongoing construction projects during their recent meeting, focusing primarily on the significant reconstruction of 25th Street and improvements along Crawfordsville Road.

Town Manager Grant Kleinhenz, alongside Street Commissioner Rob Wetnight, reported that the 25th Street project, which began on June 1, involves a full-depth reconstruction due to the road's structural failures. The project aims to ensure longevity, with plans for 9 inches of compacted stone and 9 inches of asphalt, totaling 18 inches of durable material. This robust construction is designed to last over 20 years, with an investment of nearly $3 million.

However, the project has faced delays due to severe rain, which has hindered the proof roll process—an essential step to ensure the road base can support the weight of the asphalt. After failing two proof rolls, the team is considering chemical stabilization to solidify the stone base, which may incur additional costs estimated between $150,000 to $200,000. Kleinhenz urged residents, particularly those living near the construction, to be patient as the team works through these challenges.

In addition to 25th Street, the council provided an update on Crawfordsville Road, where OCO OCO Incorporated has made significant progress on sidewalk installations. Sidewalks have been completed from the church to the Brixmor Shopping Center, with ongoing negotiations for three right-of-way parcels delaying some sections. The project remains on schedule for completion by November and will include a new pedestrian crossing and traffic signal enhancements to improve safety for residents accessing local businesses.
