Spokane Parks and Recreation celebrates Underhill Sport Court renovations with community partners

Spokane City Parks and Recreation celebrated a significant milestone on July 3, 2025, with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated sport court at Underhill Park. This project, driven by community feedback, underscores the city's commitment to enhancing local parks and recreational facilities.

Director of Parks and Recreation, Garrett Jones, emphasized the importance of community involvement in shaping park investments. "We listened, and we heard loud and clear that the neighborhoods want investments in their parks," he stated, highlighting the positive impact such developments have on local neighborhoods. The renovation aims to provide accessible sports facilities for all residents across Spokane's 29 neighborhoods.

The project was made possible through a collaborative effort, receiving funding from the City of Spokane Parks and Recreation, a matching grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office, and additional support from local organizations, including the Spokane Hoopfest Association and Dick's Sporting Goods. Bob Anderson, a member of the park board, acknowledged the community's historical commitment to park development, noting that Spokane voters have consistently supported initiatives to enhance public spaces.

The Underhill Park renovation is part of a broader vision to ensure that every resident has access to quality recreational facilities within a ten-minute walk from their homes. This initiative aligns with the city's ongoing efforts to expand and improve parkland, a commitment that dates back over a century.
