Norwalk Fire Department secures $660K for Station 1 floor replacement project

Norwalk City officials have approved a significant funding transfer to address structural issues at Fire Station Number 1, located at 90 New Canaan Avenue. During the Board of Estimate and Taxation meeting on July 7, 2025, a resolution was passed to allocate $660,064.80 from the combined dispatch capital project to fund the replacement of the station's aging floor.

The decision comes after a thorough assessment revealed movement in the concrete slab of the 1960s building, raising concerns about safety and functionality. Fire Chief Walsh explained that the station, which features three bays for emergency vehicles, has experienced worsening slab movement over the years. An engineering review confirmed that the original backfill material was improperly compacted, necessitating a comprehensive solution.

Three options were presented to the board, with the chosen method involving the installation of helical piles—essentially large, corkscrew-like structures that will provide a stable foundation without the need for extensive excavation. This approach allows the firehouse to remain operational during the repairs, which will be executed in two phases.

The funding for this project comes from an unexpected surplus in the combined dispatch capital project, which has seen significant cost underruns. City officials noted that approximately $4.5 million remains available from this project, which may be reallocated for other municipal needs in the future.

The board's decision underscores the city's commitment to maintaining public safety infrastructure while effectively managing budgetary resources. As the project moves forward, residents can expect enhanced safety and functionality at one of Norwalk's key emergency response facilities.
