Mayor McCallum proclaims July as Parks and Recreation Month in Rockwall

Rockwall City Council celebrated Parks and Recreation Month during their meeting on July 7, 2025, highlighting the vital role of local parks and recreation services in enhancing community life. Mayor Tim McCallum opened the session by praising the Parks and Recreation team for their successful organization of recent events, including a well-attended parade and a spectacular fireworks show, despite challenges posed by inclement weather.

In recognition of the importance of parks and recreation, the council officially proclaimed July as Parks and Recreation Month in Rockwall. The proclamation emphasized the significant contributions of parks and recreation professionals, noting that approximately 260 million Americans visit local parks annually. The mayor encouraged residents to engage with the community's park systems and participate in various special events throughout the month.

Travis, the Parks and Recreation Director, acknowledged the hard work of his team, including park supervisors and recreation staff, who contribute to maintaining the city’s parks and organizing events. He also highlighted the role of volunteers, specifically honoring Julie Simpson for her nine years of service in maintaining the Emerald Bay Butterfly Park, the largest Monarch way station in the city. Simpson was presented with a plaque recognizing her contributions to the city’s butterfly gardens.

The meeting also included an open forum segment, allowing residents to address the council on any topic. This segment encourages community engagement, although council members are not permitted to respond to comments during this time.
